When you look into the picture, without having a clue where this place is, you would immediately assume this is somewhere in Palawan, yes? But no, you’re wrong. This is Tangkaan Beach. This beautiful beach with picturesque rock formations lies on the southern part of Southern Leyte. Its name comes from the Visayan vernacular, “tangka-an” which means “entrance” in English. It is located in the town of Padre Burgos where you can also get a view of the historical Limasawa Island. The shoreline which spans to approximately 9 meters is covered with fine, white sand. A perfect place for those who seek serenity and solitude.

You might ask, how to get there? Well, Tangkaan Beach is now more accessible to local and foreign tourists, alike. Roads going to the beach is now concreted, unlike a decade ago. From Tacloban Airport, you can ride a van or a bus which route is bound for Maasin, Southern Leyte. You can drop by Padre Burgos town plaza or in its wharf. From there, you can ride a tricycle which will bring you to Tangkaan Beach in just a matter of 15 minutes. The entrance fee is only five pesos (P5.00). Concrete benches and tables are available for rent for P100.00 only. In the beach, you can do a lot of activities such as snorkeling, boating and diving, if you want.

Personally, I have treasured memories on this beach as well. I have been here for three times. And each time I’m on this beach, it always felt like the first. The first time I went here was like a decade ago. Those were the times when the roads going there is still rough and dusty. Things have changed for the better, indeed, since the last time I went back some time in January, this year. The formation of the rocks somehow changes as well as the beach front due to the course of weathering, perhaps. However, these changes make you go back to this place over and over again.

True to its name, Tangkaan Beach is indeed a gateway to a lot of adventures. Not only making Southern Leyte a bastion of potentials for tourism but also the best place for beach bums and aficionados to find rest, relaxation and retreat.
